Canada has the strictest health supplement standards in the world, so their requirements for fish oil products are very stringent. In fact, Canada has prohibited the sale of the vast majority of fish oil supplements produced in the United States! Sweden and Dermark have joined Canada and prohibiting the sale of EE, and Norway and the UK are not too far behind. Why? The answer has to do with how bioavailable the omega 3 fatty acids are, or how easily your body absorbs them and makes use of them. The reasoning is somewhat scientific, but I will simplify it to make it easier to understand.
The reason fish oil supplements are so great for health is because they contain omega-3s. Omega-3s are fats that are actually good for the body, so much so that the body needs them to function well. Naturally, the omega-3s found in fish exist in the form of a triglyceride. Each and every particle has three omega 3 fatty acid tails that are attached to a glycerol molecule, which is an alcohol base. These are definitely not the same kind of triglycerides that you are concerned about in your blood, so don’t worry.

Molecular distillation, a purification process, is used by many fish oil producers to clean their omega-3 products. An ethanol molecule replaces the glycerol alcohol base in each triglyceride omega-3 fatty acid.
What is the concern? It shouldn’t matter which alcohol bases are used, right? Actually, no, there is a significant difference that makes it illegal in many countries! It’s actually the case that EE-based fish oils are much harder for our bodies to absorb when compared to the more natural TG-based fish oils. In fact, research has shown that TG fish oil has a 300% higher rate of absorption by the body, which means that EE oils are only 1/3 as absorbable as TG! But that is not where the problems end.
