
Probiotic drinks and yoghurts have been found to be unable to backup the claims by their manufacturers that they benefit health by aiding digestion and strengthening the immune system. The health claims of the probiotic products could b=not be proved when investigated by the European Food Safety Authority. Over 800 claims were submitted b the companies and reviewed by the EFSA’s independent scientists but were found to be either so general that they were inadmissible or could not be shown to have the claimed effect.

None of the UK’s biggest probiotic drinks manufacturer, Danone’s products, were included in the investigation. This is because they had withdrawn the health claims that their Actimel and Activia products boosted the immune system and aided digestive health. One of their recent TV adverts does claim that their yoghurts are “good for digestive health” however. Despite this, Danone remain confident that the EFSA will not find anything untoward with the scientific claims behind their products.
